I came across these ash lagoons out of curiosity more than anything. I was looking for interesting locations near or in Edinburgh, where I live, and spotted these on maps. Without really knowing much about them I was amazed on my first visit at the barren landscape and stark bings rising up. They best in late winter when the greens from the mosses really stand out against the black soot. I think they're quite reminiscent of the Bolvian salt flats in some ways.
